Upright European Hornbeam is a medium-sized deciduous tree has a narrow upright pyramidal habit that gradually turns more vase-like as it matures.  The serrated and heavily ribbed bright green foliage turns yellow-orange in fall.  Separate male (yellow) and female (green) catkins bloom in early spring and the female catkins give way to distinct clusters of winged nutlets.  Prefers average well drained soils.
