Frans Fontaine Hornbeam is a medium-sized deciduous tree with a tight upright columnar habit that holds even as it ages.  The serrated and heavily ribbed rich green foliage turns golden yellow in fall.  Separate male (yellow) and female (green) catkins bloom in early spring and the female catkins give way to distinct clusters of winged nutlets.  Prefers average well drained soils.
