Flower / Fruit: Light pinkish lavender; blooms in early Spring before leaves emerge Soil: Well drained, moist, fertile, humus rich, well-limed, sandy, clay or loam soil; not tolerant of water-logged soil, short duration flooding or compacted soil
Foliage: Alternate, simple, entire, broad-ovate to heart shaped; leaves emerge as scarlet-purple and turn bronze green with age; turns yellow to greenish brown in Fall Light: Partial shade to full sun; flowers best in full sun
Bark:  Smooth; dark reddish brown; becomes reddish gray to black Pruning: For stronger structure, to remove hanging limbs, to reduce spread, to thin out over crowding and shading
  Uses: Small Spring flowering tree, accent tree with burgundy-red foliage, residential, small shade tree
